Today was a good day and a bad day. Yesterday was a much worst
day. I got really low on potassium and almost blacked out. I’m not sure what would have happened if I had
blacked out, but I don’t think it would
have been good. Thank God I got a hold
of some potassium meds and I think it may have even saved my life.
So today I had to go
before MAC (Metropolitan Arts Council) of Greenville, SC
to defend a grant proposal. My proposal was quite simple. I simply asked for money to buy a LCD projector to do public video projections locally. Greenville is lacking in
public art so my idea was to do pop up
video projections as a form of guerilla public art. Doesn’t sound that
complicated to me. However, I got questions regarding my target audience,
feasibility, cost of materials and
artist fee, subjects I thought I had covered in my proposal and it began to
make me angry. Plus add to that
transportation issues. I don’t know why but in terms of art it seems Greenville has a bad
habit of making art projects seem 100 times harder than what they really
are.
Someone on the grant committee even made the suggestion that
I take a step back. And do a smaller
project. What if someone had told Leonardo
DaVinci “ now hold on there!”
before painting the Mona Lisa.
When an artist has a vision , sometimes then just Have to do it. I’m getting very frustrated with the mentality that
says , “ lets not do this right now” .
Suffice to say I am unsure if I will get a grant this round, it’s only $1500
max. But if I don’t get a grant they are getting the same proposal again in a
few weeks.
