I was reading an article on actor David Arquette's vist to Michigan while work on the 4th sequel to "Scream". He had some nice things to say about Michigan which made me a bit homesick. As usual I scrolled through the comments at the end of the article and I found this one from someone named Rick which ticked me off a little. . .
"You can't help a city if some of its citizens don't want to help themselves. In between the Downtown area and the outskirts of the city is some downright scary areas. Who would want to bring their family there. Its time to shrink the city and speed up the razing of abandoned/drug houses. Its terrible and embarrassing for all of Metro Detroit."
While there is some truth to that statement I had to add my two cents. . .
"Perhaps those people might help themselves if they had more opportunity and metro Detroit wasn't so segregated. Most Detroiters are hardworkers and creative people who have lacked job opportunities long before this recent depression that has effected all of Michigan and the USA. I love Detroit and I will always be a Detroiter at heart, but what always irked me about living in the city is that the suburbs treat Detroit like an unwanted step child until there is a baseball game, concert, Piston's celebration, or Thanksgiving Parade. However, I do hope that more abandoned buildings are demolished as planned and that more of a green landscape takes over the city. I think urban farming is Detroit's future."
